This is a fish. Or it was, once. Now it is something else: a scale peeled from the surface of the fear you haven't named yet. Smooth on one side, carved on the other. The black zirconia eye holds still — watching the way your own fear watches you — calm, unblinking, waiting to see if you'll move first.
